Buceta delighted with double road win in FIBA women's Eurobasket 2019 qualifiers window

After collecting two road wins in the latest FIBA Women's Eurobasket 2019 qualifiers window, head coach Chema Buceta has been praising his players for their superb contribution in putting Great Britain firmly in the direction of a return to final round next year - having missed out in 2017.

With a win against Portugal achieved last Saturday, it was a dream double on their travels as the team edged out Israel 76-74 in Tel Aviv. While they must follow it up with two home wins in November against Portugal and Greece to be certain, they have put themselves in a great position.

"It was a fantastic game and especially seeing the girls fighting so much. Not only in the game, but in the whole camp to try and improve ourselves and make the team competitive, and then playing against a very good team in Israel," said Buceta. "It was a very emotional game, but also a very wise game. We not only played hard, but we played with intelligence and I think our team played with a lot of patience to overcome the problems that the other team put on the court. I think we must be very proud of these girls, not only for the victory, but also for the way we were able to get it.

"The key ingredients for the win were not to think about the score too much and just focus on it play-by-play. Sometimes we were down by 7 points, at other points, we were 8 points up. We didn't panic. It was good to be cool and calm and understand the game. The fact that we switched defences a lot, helped to confuse the other team," continued Buceta. "The merit is for the players, because they did a great job of understanding the game all the time and were able to play good defence.

This was a very quick game and I thought our defence was the key." The play-caller also had special praise for legendary Cardiff Met Archers guard Stef Collins, who like Temi Fagbenle, came up with a stellar double-double in the contest.  He added: "The day that Stef retires for GB, I think we will need to do a monument to her, because the amount she has done is fantastic. Stef is a player who understands the game so well, she was able to receive the ball to shoot it and she did an outstanding job."
